Landscape design and build

Design work

Our design process bridges high-end landscape architecture with practical, on-site construction expertise. We don't just draft beautiful concepts; we design with structural integrity, site dynamics, and material longevity at the forefront.

Our design process

Here is how we bring your outdoor living vision to life:

From the first walkthrough to construction-ready plans, the same team that designs your project builds it.

1. Initial Consultation & Site Analysis

Every project begins with a comprehensive site walkthrough. We evaluate your property’s existing grade, drainage patterns, sunlight exposure, architectural context, and spatial flow. During this phase, we discuss your functional goals, aesthetic preferences, preferred material palettes, and overall investment target to ensure complete alignment from day one.

2. Concept Development & Spatial Planning

Taking site measurements and environmental conditions into account, we develop initial conceptual layouts. This phase focuses on spatial planning, how hardscape features like patios, walkways, retaining walls, and outdoor structures seamlessly integrate with softscape elements and planting beds to maximize usability and visual balance.

3. Detailed Design & Material Selection

Once the preliminary layout is refined, we select exact material specifications. From natural stone, high-performance pavers, and custom timber elements to tailored planting plans built for local hardiness, every detail is curated. We provide clear 2D plans and material samples so you can visualize the textures, colors, and scale before ground is ever broken.

4. Construction-Ready Plans & Project Execution

Because we manage both design and build, our construction plans are fully detailed for structural execution. We map out precise excavation depths, base preparation standards, grading profiles, and drainage solutions to ensure your landscape is built to last. The result is a seamless transition from drawing board to site mobilization, delivered on schedule with uncompromising craftsmanship.

Service area

Design and build across Halton.

Halton Hills

Home base: Georgetown, Acton and Glen Williams

Designing in Halton Hills often starts with the grade. Escarpment and valley properties need the slope, drainage and any conservation authority limits worked into the plan from the first sketch.

Burlington

Sloped and established lots

Burlington designs often turn a sloped yard into usable levels, with steps, walls and planting that work with the escarpment grade instead of against it.

Oakville

Mature trees and finished streetscapes

In Oakville the plan usually works around mature trees and an established streetscape, with hardscape placed to protect root zones.

Also serving: Georgetown, Acton, Glen Williams and Guelph.

FAQ

Design questions we hear most.

What are the steps in the landscape design process?

Ours has four: an initial consultation and site analysis, concept development and spatial planning, detailed design and material selection, and construction-ready plans followed by the build itself. Each step is described above.

What is the difference between a landscaper and a landscape designer?

A landscape designer plans the space: the layout, materials, planting and how it all fits the site. A landscaper or contractor builds it. At Blacksmoke the same team does both, so the plans are drawn with excavation depths, base preparation and drainage already worked out, and nothing gets lost between the drawing and the build.
