Excavation

We shape the ground first, so water leaves the property instead of sitting against the foundation.

Blacksmoke Contracting digs, grades and prepares the ground for patios, walkways, driveways, retaining walls and drainage work for homeowners in Halton Hills, Burlington, Oakville and the surrounding area. Because the same crew excavates and then builds, the base is done to the standard the finished work needs.

What we build

What our excavation work covers.

Excavation for hardscape

Digging out patios, walkways, driveways and steps to the depth the base needs, and removing the soil from site.

Grading and levelling

Reshaping the yard so it slopes away from the house, levelling areas for patios and lawn, and correcting low spots where water collects.

Drainage

Swales, river rock channels, downspout tie-ins and drain pipe that carry water away from the foundation and off the property.

Retaining wall footings

Trenches and compacted crushed-stone levelling pads for armour stone and segmental block walls.

Base preparation

Compacted crushed-stone bases built up in layers and sloped to shed water, ready for pavers, slabs or concrete.

Site clean-up

Removing old concrete, asphalt, turf and fill so the new work starts on clean, solid ground.

How a excavation project runs

The part of the job you never see again.

Most problems with patios, walls and walkways start below the surface. Excavation and base work are where we take the most care.

Walkthrough

We look at the grade, how water moves across the property, access for equipment and what needs to come out.

Plan and quote

You get the depths, the drainage plan and one itemised price, including soil removal.

Locates

Underground utility locates are requested through Ontario One Call before any digging starts, and the marks are respected on site.

Dig and grade

The area is excavated to depth, soil is hauled away, and the ground is graded so water runs away from the house.

Base and handover

Crushed stone is placed and compacted in layers, ready for the finished surface, and the site is left clean.

Options

What the ground needs.

Shallow excavation

Walkways, patios and planting areas need a modest dig to fit the base and topsoil. Lighter equipment keeps damage to the lawn and access route to a minimum.

Deeper excavation

Driveways and areas that carry heavy loads need a deeper, stronger base. Retaining walls need a trench and levelling pad below the frost-affected topsoil.

Grading only

Sometimes the fix is reshaping the ground rather than building on it: correcting a slope toward the house, filling low spots or creating a swale.

Drainage solutions

Surface swales are simple and low maintenance. Buried drain pipe and river rock channels handle more water and work where the surface has to stay usable.

What it costs

What moves the number on a excavation quote.

Excavation quotes are itemised after a site walk. The main factors are the area and depth of the dig, the amount of soil that has to be hauled away, access for equipment (a narrow side yard means smaller machines and more time), what has to be removed first, such as old concrete or asphalt, and the drainage work involved.

Excavation is usually priced as part of the finished project, so you see the full cost of the patio, wall or walkway in one number.

Service area

Excavation across Halton, close to home.

Halton Hills

Home base: Georgetown, Acton and Glen Williams

Clay soils across much of Halton Hills hold water, so grading away from the house and a properly drained base matter more than usual. Properties near the Credit River valleys or on the escarpment can fall under conservation authority or Niagara Escarpment Commission rules, which we check before digging.

Burlington

Sloped lots and creek valleys

North Burlington's slopes toward the escarpment mean many yards need regrading, terracing or drainage before anything can be built. Land near the creeks that run to the lake can be regulated by Conservation Halton.

Oakville

Site alteration and tree protection

In Oakville, digging or changing the grade can require a site alteration permit from the town, and trees near the work may need protection. We confirm both before excavation is scheduled.

Also serving: Georgetown, Acton, Glen Williams and Guelph.

FAQ

Excavation questions we hear most.

What is excavation contracting?

It is the work of digging, moving and grading soil to prepare a site: removing earth to the right depth, hauling it away, shaping the ground for drainage and building a solid base for whatever goes on top.

How can I estimate the cost of excavation?

The main inputs are the area and depth of the dig, how much soil has to be removed and hauled away, equipment access and any drainage work. We measure on site and give one itemised price rather than an estimate per square foot.

What does grading a yard consist of?

Grading reshapes the ground so it slopes away from the house and water drains where it should. It can mean cutting down high spots, filling low ones, adding topsoil and compacting it, and creating swales to carry runoff.

How hard is it to regrade a yard?

A small correction can be straightforward. Larger changes need equipment, careful levels and an eye on where the water will go, including onto a neighbour's property, and some towns require a permit for significant changes to grade.
